Red Bull Flugtag Flight Lab (I wish I had designed it)

More Papervision 3D love! An impressive site developed for Red Bull using this technology. Step 1: create the fuselage of your plane, choosing the best material and designing the most aerodynamic shapes. Step 2: Play with brushes and collage to personalize it. Step 3: the Crash-Test. Fly your plane above the water, and cover as much distance as possible, collecting cans of Red Bull to refuel, showing-off some acrobatic maneuvers and avoiding obstacles and crosswinds.

When done, you can park your aircraft in the hangar, and fine-tune it before taking it on another bumpy ride. Oh and it’s been voted Site of the Month at FWA.

Created by Carlos Ulloa Matesanz, Ralph Hauwert, and John Grden. Papervision3D is a open-source 3D engine for flash, that allows developers to change the position, size and rotation of a sprite on its X, Y and Z coordinates.

The results and possibilities for this technology are truly amazing, a website is no-longer a flat canvas but can be transformed in to a rich 3d environment. Recent updates to the engine allows developers to uses triangle tessellation to distort textures and render complex objects in real 3D.

The most exciting area to Papervision3D is the ability to embed video into a 3D environment. Could this open-source technology transform the way established traditional medias allow consumers to view their content. Combing Papervision3D and a 360 degree camera can already achieve amazing immersive video allowing us to take control of the camera and become a character in the environment.

Papervision 3D starting to make an impact

Papervision 3d and full screen flash is starting to make an impact online. Just thought I would drop a quick link in to show a cool exploitation of this technology. A great site for Brahma beer in Russia makes excellent use of the Papervision 3D engine and allows you to create your own 3D model of a VW Camper. It is the first really engaging and entertaining use of the technology I have seen so far. I’m sure we will see an increasing use of this technology as it allows users to interact in a new and different way.

Do you know of any other sites using Papervision 3D well? Let me know in the comments.
