citysearch

Since November, Facebook members have been able to sign in to Citysearch using their Facebook log-ins via Facebook Connect. Then, their friends’ favorite restaurants and bars show up at the top of their Citysearch listings and they can publish their reviews to Facebook.

This meant changing Citysearch’s concept of itself from a stand-alone site to a service that publishes content all over the Web, Mr. Herratti said, and it has paid off. In the four months the site has been testing Facebook Connect, 94 percent of reviewers have published their reviews to Facebook, where an average of 40 people see them and 70 percent click back to Citysearch. That has translated into new members: daily registrations on Citysearch have tripled.

CONSUMER’S REACTION FACING ECONOMIC HARDSHIPS

I know to do the shopping. Money is just not enough for it.

Since the very beginning of the financial crisis’ boom, I’ve read a lot of forecasts about ad spending evolution in 2009 and advertisers reaction to crisis (as for example the forecasts by France pub or the EBG Barometer). All these surveys actually concerns advertisers. But what about consumers?

One year ago TNS had already ascertained an attitude of restriction amongst them. As soon as nowadays this phenomenon is accelerating, I think we need more up to date details.

The survey carried out by OTO Research goes deeper into the issue of consumers’ reaction to crisis and of their attitude towards purchases.

Here there are some of the most interesting findings I found out in the survey:

1) Consumers confirm that the financial crisis has turn into a crisis of consumption
- 84% of French people feel hit by the financial crisis and 79% are already thinking about changing their consumption habits

2) They massively intend to reduce or postpone their expenditure
- 45% will reduce their purchases; 53% will postpone them

3) They aim at a transversal optimization of purchases thanks to a stronger usage of the internet
- 89% will use the internet to compare offers and to find the best one

4) This ongoing process is developing within a context of distrust towards both Institutions and brands
- 83% of consumers don’t trust brands’ behavior

5) Furthermore, we’ve also seen that the interest for low-cost offers affects the expectation of quality for more than half the consumers
- 55% of consumers are likely to compromise to terms concerning quality in order to spend less

6) Within many categories, people agree upon the perception of products’ prices as too high
- Food ( 69%); Energy (61%); TLC (58%); Automotive (57%); Financial Services ( 57%); Travel (51%)

7) Categories, related to leisure and entertainment, are the most exposed to cut-backs. Primary needs (in a broad sense) are less touched.

Youtube gone wide!

Youtube gone wide!

Yesterday YouTube officially announced their new widescreen player, plus a few new features. I guess YouTube finally realized that the big majority of the videos that are uploaded online are largely widescreen (16:9) and 86% in the US market have a 1024×768 or higher screen resolution.

But secretly, YouTube makes a big move as the gap between the competitors is getting narrower (ie. Hulu’s revenue this year). YouTube recently announced a partnership with MGM to bring full-length movies online and much more TV content in the future.

NB: Google’s YouTube accounted for almost 35% of the 12 billion online videos Americans viewed in May, according to ComScore, while Hulu accounted for 0.07%. However, Google only advertises on a small percentage of YouTube’s videos, whereas all of Hulu’s content is sponsored.

# Targeting Gen X and Y

It’s crazy all the stuff that happen when you go away for a week. Open your computer when back and your email inbox is so bloated that it’s about to explode, your RSS reader doesn’t have enough digits to display the number of new articles, and eMarketer releases an impressive bunch of new data that you’ve probably been looking for recently to support your strategy for that awesome client you’re pitching.

So here is a summary, follow the links for more details:

- Among US Male Internet Users Ages 18-34, nearly 70% can’t live without the Web, compared with 31% who said the same for TV.

- Nearly 60% said they recalled online ads after going offline, and 47% had purchased a product or service as a result of an online ad.

- Almost 3/4 of the respondents spend more than 10 hours a week online. Forty percent of them 22 hours or more!

- Executives believe that viral marketing, peer-to-peer recommendations and sponsorship of millenials’ favorite sites are the most effective techniques for Targeting Millenial Customers:

But that’s Marketers’ opinion. Would be interesting to know what the younger generations think about those numbers!

More numbers on their way. If you can’t take the wait, pay a visit to the fine people at eMarketer.

UPDATE: I just had to ask… Posted yesterday on eMarketer:

Facebook users demographics and trends

I was in a meeting last week meeting my favorite clients, pitching ideas for 2009, when someone in the room raised the question that’s on everyone’s lips: who’s really on Facebook?

To be honest, I hadn’t updated my numbers in a while (yes, a couple of months on Facebook is like a century in real life) so I had to do a bit of research. I’ve found Matt Dickman’s The Face of Facebook ebook, a very complete report updated a couple of weeks ago with the latest data. I’ve compiled the 2 main graphics, resulting in the chart above. Basically, the majority of US users on Facebook are under 30, BUT the fastest growing population is over 30. Do you think that this trend will remain and that soon the generational gap could disappear on Facebook?

PS: drop me a line if you want the hi-res PDF of the chart.

If you’ve been postponing and postponing that French e-Commerce website, maybe now is the right moment to brief us!

Oh, and another good reason to go add a BUY button on your site, gas prices boost e-Commerce in the US, and probably everywhere else.

# Internet is huge in China (in case you were doubting)

There are more people online in China than in the USA. 253 million vs. 223 in June. And, in the country that will host the Olympics in few days, Internet usage is up 56% compared to last year. Wow. And the share of the Chinese public using the Internet is still just 19.1 percent, leaving more room for rapid growth.

If I moved to NY for Fullsix to make it in the digital marketing and retire before I’m 40, that really wasn’t a smart decision… Right, Stéphan?

#: Is your brand ready to stream itself?

UPDATE: On August 15, 2008 The Trendwatch received a cease and desist letter from the lawyers of a company named Fricken, which states that Fricken owns a trademark for the term ‘brandstream’ so that neither The Trendwatch nor Fullsix are allowed to use that term. I’ve edited the post accordingly.

According to a Universal McCann report, content consumed outside of websites has increased by 153% in the last 9 months. Furthermore, 53% of online users are consuming content outside of a publisher’s site (using widgets, RSS readers, social networks and mobile devices). A pretty good example is Ford’s Digital Snippets: YouTube videos, images from Flickr, extensive usage of tags, RSS…

Just by looking at what’s happening in our (new gorgeous) Fullsix office in New York, we’re helping four of our biggest clients to dive into this. And most of the other ones are convinced that they should develop their own content outside of their brand site. So based on this very unscientific poll, I would say that YES, brands are ready!

No breaking news here. What’s interesting is to see that they won’t take their peers’ reviews into account if there are only few. Less than 4 opinions and 68% of your consumers probably won’t buy your product. So if you’re managing an ecommerce website, make sure that you make the commenting/reviewing process as smooth as possible. I can’t wait to share with you the way we’re currently developing it for the new Kiehl’s site, that we’re gonna launch this fall. More info very soon.
