WILL WORK FOR FREE!

Yesterday at South by Southwest in Austin was THE day: All 3 industries of film, music and internet business gathered together. Free drinks. Free music. Free thinking. Free talks. Freebies…….

And all debates revolved around the ‘freemium’ business model coined by venture capitalist Fred Wilson in March 2006, yet so powerful today.

Give your goods/services away for free, possibly ad supported but maybe not, acquire a lot of customers very efficiently through word of mouth, referral networks, organic search marketing, etc., then offer premium priced value added services or an enhanced version of your service to your customer base.

Chris Anderson -- editor in chief of Wired and daddy of ‘The Long Tail’ -- pushed the debate further and marketed his next book called ‘Free’ coming out very soon for only $0.00!

Low-cost digital distribution will make the summer blockbuster free.
Theaters will make their money from concessions — and by selling a premium movie-going experience at a high price.

Ads on the subway? That’s so 20th century.
By sponsoring the whole line and making trips free, the local merchants association brings grateful commuters to neighborhood shops.

It’s a free second-gen Wiii!
But only if you buy the deluxe version of Rock Band.

WHY NOT?
zappos.com is already offering free shipping both ways when you want to try a pair of shoes.
NBC, FOX, ABC are already broadcasting online TV show like Lost, 24, House, …etc. thru hulu or directly for free.

So, the major keynote yesterday was a conversation between Chris Anderson and Guy Kawasaki about free business models and here is a subjective selection from my digital camera, brought to you…. for free!

Today’s weather in Austin is still sunny, bands are rocking the city and we are going to help them set the music industry free!
