Pimp my iPhone

Remember the last time you opened Internet Explorer, probably 5.0 by then, to find some fancy new images for your desktop (or wallpapers as they call it in Redmond)? Chances are that you went for a Calvin Klein ad or a screengrab from Titanic. Sweet.

Poolga does a great job at helping you getting rid of the ugly backgrounds in your precious iPhone (Earth, Mona Lisa, a clown fish, what were they thinking?). The site’s material is user-generated, but on an invite-only basis, meaning that you submit your portfolio and if they like your work, you’re in. Sleek.

Red Bull Flugtag Flight Lab (I wish I had designed it)

More Papervision 3D love! An impressive site developed for Red Bull using this technology. Step 1: create the fuselage of your plane, choosing the best material and designing the most aerodynamic shapes. Step 2: Play with brushes and collage to personalize it. Step 3: the Crash-Test. Fly your plane above the water, and cover as much distance as possible, collecting cans of Red Bull to refuel, showing-off some acrobatic maneuvers and avoiding obstacles and crosswinds.

When done, you can park your aircraft in the hangar, and fine-tune it before taking it on another bumpy ride. Oh and it’s been voted Site of the Month at FWA.

The Semi-Long Tail of Social Networks

A good visual reminder that there are other social networks than Facebook and MySpace. Would love to see an update with more recent stats, but it’s a good start! Spotted in a French newspaper by the great BFFB. (We’ll be at SxSW too if you want to meet!)

Because using your sleeve just isn’t cool.

tiss.jpg

So small, so lightweight, so useful, and such a great marketing/advertising tool! Ah yes, the tissue packet has more uses then for just blowing your nose and wiping your personal areas in Japan.

In larger cities (usually very close to train stations) you can find a small group of people standing around handing out packets of tissues. This small packet contains a little flyer that is on top with an advertisements varying from adult bookshops, English schools, mobile companies, and more.

These people handing out the packets have one job. They are told which specific demographic to hand the packet to. Say the advertisement is for a women’s spa, generally the target demographic would be women (obviously) ranging from ages of 20+. So thats who they would hand the packets too.

While I was living there I really needed a tissue. I walked past the group of “Givers” and they handed me nothing. So I walked back and walked through the group again. Again, nothing. Finally I had to ask a girl if I could have a pack, because I really had a lot of hana mizu (nose water) dipping from my nose. I thanked her, looked at the ad and read the advertisement for a Men’s Host Pub (thats where women pay for the company of a nice beautiful man, enjoy drinks, and talk about “things”). So I guess I wasn’t the target they wanted to reach…

I feel there is a reason though why it works in Japan, and not here in America. Often times you can’t find toilet paper in a public restroom. In restaurants a small moist rolled towel is given too you, but napkins are not. At each table it’s not uncommon to find a whole box of tissues to use instead.

I do feel this is an excellent way to reach the target demographic and how they can refuse? A tissue is one of the most useful, multipurpose inventions ever created. Plus it’s free so how can someone resist?

Facebook Pages for Brands, now with potential usefulness and real awesomeness!

Edgard and I are happy kids today. We’ve been raving for month about the ruined potential of the Facebook Pages as a marketing tool, because of its rigid structure (hard to match a brand’s look and feel), lack of openness (all the elements had to be developed as Facebook apps) and interactivity (no user upload allowed), a paradox for a social platform!

Every time we came up with an idea that would be fun and useful for both the consumers and one of our client, it would either be impossible to develop because of the technical constraints, or way too expensive, since we would have to develop numerous Facebook applications for a single page. So we eventually gave up on the idea.

Until this morning, when I noticed an Update in my Facebook inbox:

Facebook Pages have some new features available for you:

1. User Photo Uploads
Now, your fans will be able to upload photos to your Facebook Page…if you let them. Go to your Facebook Page and Edit on the Photos box to turn on this feature. All New Pages will have this feature pre-enabled upon creation.

2. Dynamic Content in the Profile Box
You can now replace the main picture on your Facebook Page with dynamic content using either the Flash or FBML applications. Just install either of these applicaitons (find them at www.facebook.com/facebookpages and then select the flash/fbml option when you choose to edit your profile picture.) (…)

Wow. All of the issues we had encountered, solved after one message. Your fans can upload pictures on your page, imagine all the possibilities… And no more need to develop Facebook applications using their proprietary language that only few master. And you can have Flash content!!! Dear dear you-know-who-you-are client, Edgard and I are back in the Facebook game, watch your inbox…

My obsession for great food goes beyond my brand new pasta machine. It also shows in my bookmarks bar. There is a plethora of websites to find recipes, and the new generation embraces the web 2.0ness. Here are my favorites:

MARTHA STEWART, THE MOTHER OF ALL

martha.jpg

She’s the Oprah of cooking and was once one of the most powerful women in the US, before being convicted of lying to investigators about a stock sale for which she had to serve five months in prison. She’s even bigger after a much publicized comeback at the head of a media and merchandising empire. The content of years of tips and recipes found in her magazines, books and TV shows are gathered in one site, while acting as a hub promoting all the goods under her name, sold at Kmart, Lowe’s, Macy’s
I love the site’s refined design, the depth and quality of content, and the small and subtle touches of AJAX. And it adds to my homemaking cred.

TASTE SPOTTING, HIP AND INTRIGUING

taste.jpg

Started in 2007 by the NotCot team, the site acts like an aggregator of recipes found on different blogs and submitted by the readers. No complex search tool here, the user browse through a grid of gorgeous images until inspired by one of them, clicking on it to be redirected to the source blog. Surprisingly addictive.

COOKTHINK, THE ONE THAT LISTENS

mood.jpg

You just bumped into your sexy date on a date with another date, and decide to impress your girlfriends with some South American food based on the few ingredients available in your fridge. That’s basically what CookThink offers you. Browse the tag cloud and select all the relevant items. So that would be in this case consoling, Argentinian, chicken and onion. And you get… French Onion And Shallot Soup! OK, I guess that the search engine needs some fine tuning. Give chance another spin by clicking on “Almost… show me more recipes”, which is actually my favorite page on the site. I also dig the related tips, the Meal Builder and their blog.

OPEN SOURCE FOOD, THE SOCIAL SITE FOR HOME-CHEFS

coco.jpg

That one has a list of impressive features for a site developed by one guy! Recipes are user-generated, and “home-chefs” have a profile page that gathers submitted recipes, loved ones, comments posted by others… You can follow your favorite users to be updated when they post new dishes. A bit like facebook’s Activity Feed for gourmets, sans the retarded apps. Seriously impressive, convenient and well thought.

I wish my blog had more spiders

Blogging Cycle
Ever wondered what happens just after you post on your Blog? Frank Rose from Wired Magazine did, and he took the time to explain the complex chain of events that follow. It is impressive how every piece of information you upload to a Blog hosting service has the ability to trigger a unique action that means something to someone.
Spiders, Ping Servers, Search Engines, Data Miners, Text Scrapers, Social Bookmarks, Aggregators, Ad Servers, Corporations, Spam Blogs, Online Media, and (last but not least) the Readers - they all want to hear what you have to say and benefit from it, either financialy or intelectualy. Of course, reputation plays an important role here and your Blog and the genius of your thoughts and words remain the most important element in this peculiar information cycle.

In case we caught you blogging late night thinking how your Blog’s Technorati authority sucks, remember that you are not alone. Everything you write has an impact on “something else’s life”… even if that something is a Spider.

As seen on Wired Magazine

'Sente'

Introducing ‘Sente’, a Uganda breakthrough mobile service that re-invents personal banking and makes it available to millions of ‘ineligible’ bank customers.

‘Joe lives in Kampala and wants to send his sister Vicky 10,000 Ugandan Shillings ($5). He buys pre-paid airtime for that amount, but instead of topping up his own phone, he calls up the local phone kiosk operator in Vicky’s village. The phone kiosk operator uses the credit to top up his own phone, takes a commission of between 10 and 30%, and passes the rest onto Vicky in cash. The kiosk operator resells the airtime at a profit (it is after all his business)…’

Jan Chipchase and Indri Tulusan present Sente in their outstanding study for Nokia ‘Exploratory Field Research from Uganda and Beyond’.

PAPERVISION3D

Created by Carlos Ulloa Matesanz, Ralph Hauwert, and John Grden. Papervision3D is a open-source 3D engine for flash, that allows developers to change the position, size and rotation of a sprite on its X, Y and Z coordinates.

The results and possibilities for this technology are truly amazing, a website is no-longer a flat canvas but can be transformed in to a rich 3d environment. Recent updates to the engine allows developers to uses triangle tessellation to distort textures and render complex objects in real 3D.

The most exciting area to Papervision3D is the ability to embed video into a 3D environment. Could this open-source technology transform the way established traditional medias allow consumers to view their content. Combing Papervision3D and a 360 degree camera can already achieve amazing immersive video allowing us to take control of the camera and become a character in the environment.
