Facebook Love: Friends Lists Are Here, But Pointless

You’ve been waiting for this for what feels forever. And Facebook just released it and screwed it up. You can create multiple lists of friends, to separate co-workers from one-night stands, but so far you can only use these groups as mailing lists. I know, you were expecting some kind of multi-level Privacy Settings according to the different groups, so that your boss and clients won’t see those gruesome pictures of you misbehaving at the Office Xmas Party. Me too. Let’s keep whining until then.

You never got a thing for languages, your English teacher in High School had the charisma of Jessica Fletcher, the French one was from Manchester and Chinese takeout menus scare you. But you still need to talk to your client across the Channel, your co-worker in the Paris office and that guy in Taiwan that delivers iPhones for $50 but only speaks Mandarin. Forget embarrassing phone calls during which you have to pretend that the line is very bad and that you can’t understand a thing. Use Google Talk instead. Assisted by bots, your conversation is automatically translated both ways. Merci Uncle Tom, merci.
