Great post by Andy Rutledge about the recent redesign of CNN’s website, explaining the quiet structure techniques that have been applied to enhance the clarity of presentation.

Less design noise, clearer information hierarchy.

i think they wanted/succeeded in differentiating themselves from fox, nbc, usatoday, etc with a more progressive look because i think their agenda has become more progressive… as news should be. wholistic and complete, there are some real nice and subtle design choices within the site. i’m a fan.

The new design is the essence of clarity, and they now really stand out as a destination for news compared to the other sites mentioned above. I love the clarity of seeing alternate media from the same story, video and interactive are clearly displayed at the top, and in an accessible format. I am also a big fan.
