The number of Internet users in China is getting close to this of the USA: 160 millions in June 2007. Or 100,000 new Chinese people connected to the Web every minute day! (thanks Martin)

US Elections 2008: When Voters Steal the Show

Populations living in Democratic countries have little interest for Politics. So who does a big corporate TV channel like CNN call to the rescue to spice up the Democratic presidential debate? Who else but one of the most talked about young sites: YouTube! Americans were invited to shoot and upload their video-questions for the candidates, and more than 3,000 did. Among which almost 40 were selected by a team of CNN journalists, covering a wide array of topics from healthcare to Irak, gay marriage, guns, global warming. Imagine, on the main stage, the 8 Democratic candidates facing a huge screen. The CNN anchor Anderson Cooper in between, making sure that all of them had a chance to express their views.

So yes, it was quite entertaining to watch a snowman ask about global warming and his own endangered future, moving to watch a couple of lesbians from Brooklyn wonder about the position of the candidates about gay rights, and scary to realise that when a man from Michigan was wondering if his baby was safe, he was referring to his impressive rifle that looked straight from a Rambo movie.

The first questioner was calling for some real revolution in this “revolutionary” debate as CNN had been promoting it, challenging the candidates to actually answer the questions posed, avoid the usual political b*shit. Of course this didn’t happen and the answers were less memorable than the questions.

But this experiment was another proof that the political debate is really going down to the public arena, that you don’t need to be a journalist at the NY Times to be heard. Bloggers and online social network users have already been integrated in the political landscape here in the US and their impact on the issue of the 2008 elections will be immense. Just have a look at Hillary Clinton’s site. And her challenger’s, Barack Obama. You could think that they’re some myspace/facebook competitors. Not to mention their profiles on those 2 previously mentioned sites…

Democracy comes from the Greek word demokratia, meaning “Power to the People”. We’re really getting closer.

France, 1st semester 2007: €1.2 Billion spent on online-advertising. A 40% increase compared to last year. Internet now represents 10.8% of the overall advertising market! If i were you, i would stick to those stock-options you’ve received back in 2001.

Papervision 3D starting to make an impact

Papervision 3d and full screen flash is starting to make an impact online. Just thought I would drop a quick link in to show a cool exploitation of this technology. A great site for Brahma beer in Russia makes excellent use of the Papervision 3D engine and allows you to create your own 3D model of a VW Camper. It is the first really engaging and entertaining use of the technology I have seen so far. I’m sure we will see an increasing use of this technology as it allows users to interact in a new and different way.

Do you know of any other sites using Papervision 3D well? Let me know in the comments.

Stresstetainment

What to do, what to do…?

 The average person works about 8 hours a day – facing daily stress, timings, clients, deadlines, meeting, the whole works! Afterwards, he comes home to relax, have dinner, enjoy time with his loved ones and entertain himself for the little time he has left in the day. What are his options? Basically something like this:

- Watch an episode from his favorite series – Desperate Housewives, Lost, Heroes, House, Kyle XY, Grey’s Anatomy, Nip/Tuck, The Simpsons, Family Guy, South Park, etc… – after all, that’s what everybody’s been talking about lately at the office;

- Play one of those videogames he’s been keeping in the shelves for the past 6 months – for either the Computer, the PS2 or PS3 or PSP, the Nintendo Wii or DS, or even the XBOX360;

- Do a movie update – Pirates of the Caribbean, Spider Man, Fantastic Four, 300, The Simpsons Movie, Ratatouille, Shrek 3, Harry Potter and the Order of the Phoenix, Transformers, Die Hard 4.0, etc… – or he could rent one, if only he could choose one;

- Catch up on his reading – either see the various bookmarked internet websites he’s been trying to keep track of, or one of the 10 advised books on Amazon with an average of 200 pages each, or just the Newspaper;

- Listen to those songs everybody is listening to now – he probably wonders what happened to Take That by now…

- Or he could just watch TV – one of the 40000 channels available, with different perspectives on the same subject and news.

So, the major question is: what to pick? What is a person to do with these many options?

Welcome to the Stresstetainment, a new form of stress born from the over-exposure to too many sources of entertainment at once. We have too many engaging and important options to fit in the small amount of free time we have each day and on the weekend – and of course, considering the average married man with two kids, this means even less free time. I’ve always wanted to keep track of the wines I’ve tasted at home or out, so that i could buy again the ones I enjoyed and avoid the other ones. So I started many lists of my own ratings on paper, on my mac, but always failed to keep them up to date. Snooth is a young site where you can store the reviews you write about the wines you’ve tasted, share the ratings with your friends, get personal recommendation according to your reviews, aggregate opinions from users and pros, receive help to pair wine and food, and so on. Still room for improvement but I’m gonna start another of those lists there and hopefully won’t drop it after one week.

Disclaimer: yes, shamelessly, i’ve linked to the page where my parents’ wine is rated ;)

Crunching Numbers

Introducing a new category of short posts, inspired by my last two meetings. People always ask for crazy, obscure numbers and if you don’t want to sound like you have no idea what they are talking about, you have no other option but to know!

So that one day, hopefully, you’ll be able to thank us when your client asks you how many minutes are spent per user per month on facebook, how much US households spend online, or if people really do listen to podcasts.

All you’ll have to do is, calmly, say:
- 190
- 31.5 billion for Q1 2007
- 13% do.

If you have numbers, questions, stories you want to share, please send!
